Winter may not initially seem like the ideal time to sell your home, with shorter days, colder weather and the festive period fast approaching. However, the winter months can offer several advantages for sellers who know how to make the most of this period in the market.

Less direct competition

Spring is traditionally the busiest season for property listings. In winter, fewer homes are available, which means your property has a better chance of standing out! Buyers who are house hunting at this time of year also tend to be more committed; whether due to job changes, family circumstances, or relocation deadlines.

Motivated buyers

The UK property market never fully shuts down, even at Christmas! Many buyers will actively browse listings online year-round, often using the festive period as time to plan their next move while they have more time. With fewer options available out there, they’re more likely to book a viewing if your home is presented well and stands out.

Homes can feel more inviting

A warm, cosy home with nice lighting (and even a lit fire if you have one) can make for a strong emotional impact for viewers. Winter creates the perfect atmosphere for highlighting comfort, warmth, and even energy efficiency in your home.

How to make your home stand out

Lighting really is everything! Winter days are short and it gets dark very early, so maximise every drop of natural and artificial light available. Ensure to open curtains and blinds fully where possible, use warm white bulbs, and use lamps to soften darker corners.

Keep your home warm and cosy without overheating. Potential buyers will step in from the cold expecting comfort. A warm home can instantly create a positive impression and a cold one can lead to the viewing being over as quickly as it started!

  • Set heating to a comfortable, consistent temperature
  • If you have a fireplace, light it for viewings
  • Use throws, cushions, and soft textures

Maintenance

Edinburgh winters can be wet, windy, and occasionally icy. Don’t let the weather dull your first impression. Keep any pathways clear and safe where appropriate, consider some evergreen plants or winter blooms, and don’t forget to check the bulb in your outdoor light!

A tidy exterior shows the property is well cared-for and buyers will always remember the first impression they got from viewing your home when they come to making a decision on whether to submit an offer or not.
