A focus on Wills - essential checklist

Welcome to our comprehensive blog series that delves into the intricate world of Wills and estate planning. In this thoughtfully curated collection, we aim to demystify the complexities surrounding Wills, offering insightful guidance and expert advice. Whether you’re a first-time planner or looking to revisit your existing arrangements, join us on this journey as we explore the crucial aspects of Wills, from understanding the legal nuances to practical tips on effective estate management. Our series is designed to empower you with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about the future, ensuring your wishes are respected and your loved ones are well taken care of. Let’s embark on this enlightening exploration of Wills together.

Let’s start with the simple first step – a checklist of what information to put together before you meet with your solicitor.

  1. A list of your assets together with as many details as you hold. This may include land or buildings owned by you, either solely or with another (plus the location of Title Deeds), vehicles, business assets, investments, bank accounts, pensions, overseas property, life insurance, personal belongings, and so on.  Importantly, also list any virtual and online accounts you hold including social media, shopping, photo storage, etc, including safe storage of passwords and codes.  It is also helpful to list any outstanding loans.
  2. Who you wish to benefit from your estate – “beneficiaries”.
  3. Who you wish to deal with the administration of your estate – “executors”.
  4. Details of any accountants and financial advisers you may use. Perhaps you already hold a “my documents folder” which is a fantastic aid for executors and is likely to save time and administration expense.  We would be very happy to discuss the above with you further or indeed chat through any other questions this may have sparked.
