The Gilson Gray Traineeship: What to Expect

Having only completed my first month as a trainee in the Edinburgh Private Client team, you would think commenting on what to expect during my traineeship is premature. However, in my brief time at the firm, I have enjoyed many things that the firm has to offer so I want to share some things I think you can expect as a trainee here at Gilson Gray.

In your Department

Internally you should expect to feel extremely supported by your colleagues. As you are given valuable work from day one, it can feel quite daunting at first, however you are consistently reminded to ask questions (silly questions do not exist at Gilson Gray) and reminded to never sit struggling with work – help is always there when you need it. This support will allow you work independently and feel confident handling your work load early on which is a huge benefit to any trainee.

Away from the Desk

A big reason I chose Gilson Gray was because they are a modern firm with a focus on enjoying opportunities outside of the office. So far, my expectations of these opportunities have not fallen short of brilliant! From being invited to a Private Client Pub Quiz with other national firms (where we may have come last but definitely had the most fun there), to helping out at the annual Grace Charity Gala. Any prospective trainee should look forward to these types of events through their time with the firm.

The GG Expectations

An important point to note – Gilson Gray also have expectations on their trainees, but this hasn’t been mentioned to scare you! You have been hired as a trainee because Gilson Gray see what value you can bring to the firm, so they do expect to see that when you commence work with them. Remember, it’s a two way street – you want to get the most out the firm just as much as they want to get the best out of you.

If you were expecting an enriching experience allowing you to consolidate your university knowledge and put this into practice in an environment where you are supported and encouraged then you’d be spot on!
