Making the Most of Networking Opportunities as a Trainee

Much like many things in life, you get out what you put in and that is inherently true of networking. If you are able to put yourself out there, you will certainly reap the benefits as you see your network growing. However, you want to make sure you are making the right impression, so here are some tips on how to make the most of networking opportunities as a trainee.

As the new guy in town, you will be meeting new people every day so never underestimate a conversation with a new colleague. While these conversations may start in the kitchen making a morning brew or standing by the printer doing some scanning, make sure to be genuine and curious. You can never re-do a first impression!

Going to CPD events will become a part of life as a trainee and they are also a brilliant way to make new connections. You may choose to speak with the fellow attendees who are completing their own traineeships elsewhere, or you might start a conversation with a speaker at the event. Whichever conversation you find yourself in, ask lots of questions but remember to be an active listener.

As well as CPD events and especially at Gilson Gray, there are plenty opportunities to get involved in firm organised events where you can make new connections. From the end of month drinks, where you can socialise with people from across the whole firm, to helping out at the Grace Gala where you can network with external clients. The more you can involve yourself with these events, the larger your network can grow.

Following up is incredibly important. Whether you chatted with that colleague in the kitchen or spoke with a fellow attendee of a CPD event, request them on LinkedIn or send them a Teams message. This will reinforce any connection that was made previously.

Finally, it’s a tale as old as time, but consistency is key. It is important to regularly engage with your network, colleagues or wider connections as this encourages stronger relationships to be formed.

Networking is both an opportunity and a skill and hopefully these tips will allow you to make the most of any opportunity that you have!
