First Few Months as a Debt Recovery Trainee

The first few months of my seat in Debt Recovery have been both exciting and challenging. Debt Recovery offers a steep learning curve, as well as valuable insight into litigation work, the practical applications of the law, and maintaining strong client relationships through different approaches.

The time has certainly flown by, and my time has undoubtedly been filled with new learning opportunities and experiences that have pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Starting with the Debt Recovery team, I knew very little about this area of law, and I was surprised to learn just how varied the work can be. Behind every client and every debt is a business or individual trying to achieve a particular outcome. Understanding those objectives and helping clients navigate the recovery process has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the role so far and has, without a doubt, been invaluable to my growth as a trainee solicitor.

I have quickly learned that clients are not necessarily looking for an explanation of the law; they are looking for quick practical solutions. While legal knowledge is essential, being able to apply that knowledge practically and commercially is just as important. It has been interesting to see how strategic decision-making plays a role in achieving the best possible outcome for our clients.

Over these last few months, I have gained experience across various Debt Recovery processes and the different stages involved. From reviewing files and drafting correspondence to preparing court documents and monitoring progress on matters, I have been exposed to a wide range of work.

One thing that has stood out is the importance of attention to detail. Even seemingly minor errors can have significant consequences when dealing with court procedures and deadlines. As a result, I have become more meticulous in my approach and have developed a greater appreciation for the importance of accuracy in legal practice. I am continuing to strengthen my skills every day.

I have gained a better understanding of the commercial realities that clients face. For many businesses, unpaid debts can have a real impact on cash flow and day-to-day operations. Recovering those sums is often about more than just the money itself; it is about protecting a business’s financial health and allowing it to move forward.

Time management has also played a key role in my development. Balancing multiple files, client expectations, deadlines, and new learning opportunities requires organisation and adaptability. There have been busy days when priorities have changed quickly and learning how to respond to those demands has been invaluable.

Most importantly, one of the highlights of the first few months of my seat in Debt Recovery has undoubtedly been the opportunity to appear at Sheriff Court Hearings. As a trainee solicitor, this was an aspect of the role that I was both excited and nervous about, but it has proven the most valuable learning experience so far. Looking back from my first appearance to how much more confident I am now is like night and day. It is daunting and intimidating but also thrilling and equally as rewarding.

Looking to the future, I have accepted a position as an NQ Solicitor starting in September. Qualification is on the horizon, and while there is still much to learn, the last three months have provided a strong foundation for the remainder of my training contract. I am proud of the progress I have made and grateful for the support of my colleagues, whose guidance has been invaluable throughout this journey. The Debt Recovery team is exceptional at what they do, and I feel grateful to be part of such a hardworking team and to learn from them every day.

As I move into the last few weeks of my traineeship, I am excited to build on these experiences, take on new challenges, and further develop the skills needed for a successful career as a solicitor in Debt Recovery. If the first three months are anything to go by, the rest of my training contract promises to be just as rewarding, and I am looking forward to seeing where the journey takes me next.
