A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor in Private Client

Kirsten Dickie Aberdeen

I started my traineeship in September with Gilson Gray in the Private Client department. Each day brings its own challenges and rewards, and I love what I do. Here’s a glimpse into my daily routine.

Every day can be different, however I always start the day by checking my emails and calendar, and making a to-do list of the tasks I will undertake for the day. It’s important to prioritise my tasks, especially if I have client meetings scheduled, which I am fortunate enough to attend alongside the partner who oversees my work.

Today, I attended our department’s weekly training session which is led by the department head, Joe Davies. This hour long training session provides valuable guidance as a trainee, as well as general updates, which refreshes the whole department’s knowledge on various matters. I really enjoy the weekly training session, and it is great to have a chance to see my colleagues in different offices.

After our meeting, I started my task list. This included a range of tasks, such as drafting fees, registering Powers of Attorney, and finalising draft wills to send to clients for signing. I enjoy having the autonomy to get involved in client work, whilst under the supervision of my partner, as it gives a realistic insight into daily life once you qualify as a solicitor.

In the afternoon, I like to incorporate some study time into my daily routine so that I am maintaining what I know from university and learning new aspects of the role. This can be attending CPD seminars, reading the Journals of the Law Society of Scotland, or looking over notes from when I started my seat. It is important to try and make the most of the six months I have in each department as time really does fly. That is why I am trying to immerse myself in the role by constantly learning and asking my colleagues questions – there is no such thing as a silly question when you are a trainee solicitor at Gilson Gray.

I end my day by ensuring I have completed all my tasks for the day and by having a catch up with my supervising partner. Even a five minute debrief before the end of the day ensures I can pass on any information or ask any questions I have had throughout the day. It also provides opportunity to think about the day ahead tomorrow and wind down from the day.

Being a trainee at Gilson Gray has been such a positive step in my legal career, and it is exciting to be a part of such a progressive firm that values its employees. I would recommend any law student to apply to the Gilson Gray traineeship!
