Gilson Gray Bolsters Employment Law Team with Partner Appointment

Stuart Robertson

One of Scotland’s most prominent employment law specialists has been appointed as a Partner at Scotland’s fastest growing legal business. Joining from Ledingham Chalmers, Stuart Robertson will join Gilson Gray as it aims to substantially increase its footprint in the employment law sector. The appointment represents another significant scalp for the young award winning full service legal firm, which since its launch in 2014 has been able to cherry pick talent from across the industry.

Stuart, said: “I’m delighted to be joining Gilson Gray and I have been very impressed by its culture and client list.

“The firm has been able to position itself in the market at this stage of its development on the basis of good service and maintaining strong client relationships.

“Graham (Millar) and I have already discussed expanding the team as the firm looks to establish itself as a major player in the employment law sector.”

Stuart is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in employment law and discrimination law as well as being ranked by Chambers Directory in the field of employment law.

Stuart is also accredited by Core Mediation as a mediator – recognised as a valuable asset across both litigation and employment law.

Head of Employment Law at Gilson Gray, Graham Millar, believes Robertson’s appointment signals the Firm’s nationwide ambition.

He said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming Stuart to the Employment Law team. He is widely regarded as a top operator and especially well known for the quality of his work across the North East.

“He has great contacts across the private and public sectors in the region and nationally. We are committed to becoming one of the leading providers of employment law services in Scotland and this recent appointment is a key step in our development.”

Having also worked with Paull and Williamsons, Robertson qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and has accrued 20 years experience acting for FTSE 100 companies and public sector organizations.

Glen Gilson, Managing Partner at Gilson Gray, said: “From day one we have tried to ensure that the business is balanced between Glasgow and Edinburgh, but also that our ambition and service range is known throughout the nation.

“Stuart represents an important element in so positioning the Firm. His credentials are outstanding and it will be exciting to watch the employment division of the business continue to develop over coming months.

“Our people are the reason for the success of the business. They drive our client service which is the most important element of the picture. We are extremely grateful for the confidence and support we have enjoyed from our client base and the wider Scottish business community. We remain firmly on the acquisition trail and I would actively encourage the nation’s top talent to get in touch with us.”

Bucking industry trends of cutbacks and mergers, Gilson Gray now boasts one of the largest service capabilities in the country. The Firm has recently taken on more office space in both regions and has clearly signaled its intent to expand further in the coming year. The Firm was recently awarded M & A Firm of the Year and New Business of the Year, following upon such awards as Firm of the Year and Client Focus Firm of the Year.

The Firm has successfully secured a number of high profile personnel both since launch and during the last 12 months – including the appointment of Deborah McCathie as a Partner and Head of Residential Conveyancing, along with her team from Warners LLP, as well as the entire Commercial Litigation team from Morisons LLP.

In 2014, Gilson Gray opened as the largest full service law firm launch in Scottish legal history, with a portfolio of talent poached from the leading firms in Scotland – opening simultaneously in Glasgow and Edinburgh with a radical client-focus strategy that offers a cost effective alternative to the top ten firms in the country.
